di questa espressione: Delta 2, Ero, Phase 2
e Rammellzee. Di queste memorabili giornate
è rimasta una traccia indelebile su un muro
nel centro del paese.

Questo il punto di partenza per QUA - Quattordio Urban Art, che nel 2017 ha celebrato il lascito di questi illuminati alle nuove generazioni, realizzando dieci muri con alcuni tra i più noti rappresentanti italiani di questo linguaggio: Airone, Ericsone, Flycat, KayOne, Mr. Wany, Napal Naps, Ores, Rendo, Tawa, Zeus e un’opera, proseguendo la strada indicata nel 1984, invitando a dipingere Kool Koor, amico dei kids e storico ambasciatore della vecchia scuola di New York. Nessuna Frontiera raccoglie lo storico volume realizzato in occasione del primo evento American Graffiti dove tutto è iniziato e ciò che è accaduto durante la prima edizione di QUA - Quattordio Urban Art. Passato, presente e futuro di Quattordio.
In 1984, the village of Quattordio hosted the first Italian event dedicated to Graffiti Writing, inviting some of the most important New York pioneers of this artistic expression: Delta 2, Ero, Phase 2 and Rammellzee. A trace of these memorable days has remained indelible on a wall in the town center. This is the starting point for QUA - Quattordio Urban Art, which in 2017 celebrated the legacy of the enlightened ones with the new generations creating ten walls with some of the best-known Italian representatives of this language/art: Airone, Ericsone, Flycat, KayOne, Mr.Wany, Napal Naps, Ores, Rendo, Tawa, Zeus and a work of art, to continue the road indicated in 1984, by inviting Kool Koor to paint, friend of the kids and historical ambassador of New York Old School. Nessuna Frontiera collects the historical volume created on the first American Graffiti event, when it all began, and what happened during the first QUA edition - Quattordio Urban Art. NESSUNA FRONTIERA - NO FRONTIER

L’evento di Quattordio ha sempre rappresentato per me un aspetto fondamentale del Graffiti Writing, la condivisione e il viaggio. Questa cultura, nata in un ghetto, ha superato tutte le frontiere ed è arrivata ovunque nelle nostre città. Nessuna frontiera, da New York a Quattordio, come se fosse normale che capitasse, la forza dell’arte, l’anticipazione di quello che si sarebbe realizzato negli anni avvenire. Quattordio è un piccolo paese, che nulla aveva da condividere con questa espressione, se non fosse nell’autenticità delle persone e nella voglia di aprirsi al mondo. Arte di Frontiera, per chi ha voluto studiare la storia del Graffiti Writing è una tappa fondamentale per il nostro paese, ma anche per l’Europa, che grazie a questa mostra e alla venuta dei kids ha ricevuto una spinta fondamentale. Una mostra nata dall’intuizione della curatrice Francesca Alinovi, tanto simile a quella di Renzo Gay, cittadino di Quattordio, viaggiatore e amministratore di una azienda di vernici del paese, che innamorato dell’arte e del colore decise di portare questi maestri, nella realtà di una piccola provincia italiana. La mostra Arte di Frontiera, aperta nel 1984 alla Galleria d’arte moderna di Bologna (oggi MAMbo), per poi proseguire a Milano e Roma, fu l’occasione per invitare alcuni degli artisti presenti all’esposizione a dipingere nel paese di Quattordio. Delta 2, Ero, Phase 2 e Rammellzee, delle vere leggende del Writing newyorkese, che per la prima volta incontravano il mondo, uscendo dal loro ghetto e avendo quel riscatto che la loro arte gli aveva decretato. Da qui nasce la storia contemporanea di questo paese, da persone illuminate, che hanno reso questo luogo un simbolo dell’apertura del mondo a questo linguaggio, che ha rivoluzionato l’estetica delle nostre strade e il concetto di fruizione dell’arte. Il mio viaggio parte da qui, come irriducibile innamorato del Writing, che doveva vedere dal vivo quello che rimaneva a Quattordio dello storico evento del 1984, American Graffiti. Una vera festa, dove gli artisti poterono confrontarsi con la genuina spontaneità dei quattordiesi, condividendo del buon vino e regalando alla città muri e quadri, ma non solo... esibizioni di break dance e improvvisazioni rap accompagnati dalla banda del paese. Era il 1984, penso che la sensazione reciproca fosse di stupore, scoperta e amore per le differenze, che erano motivo di unione e non di separazione. Quella mia visita a Quattordio fu l’occasione per far riscoprire un ruolo perso negli anni e far nascere la voglia di dare continuità a quello che accadde anni prima. In occasione dell’evento del 1984, fu realizzato un libro molto raro edito da Nuove edizioni Gabriele Mazzotta che qui ripropongo nei suoi contenuti, dando nuova vita a quei documenti che sarebbero altrimenti memoria di pochi. Ampliato con fotografie e testi inediti del 1984 questo libro però non si ferma qui, parla della storia di Quattordio legata al Graffiti Writing, ma anche del suo futuro, con il nuovo evento QUA - Quattordio Urban Art, che insieme all’amministrazione comunale abbiamo pensato e realizzato, per dare appunto continuità a quella intuizione che molti anni prima aveva reso celebre il paese in tutta Europa. Perciò un libro che ripercorre il passato, il presente e il futuro di Quattordio, diventando nuova testimonianza dell’idea maturata insieme all’ammistrazione, di dare continuità ad American Graffiti con un evento biennale, che porti il paese a diventare un museo a cielo aperto, un proseguimento del lavoro iniziato tanti anni prima. Il mio scopo era dare nuova vita a questi importanti documenti, ma anche celebrarli invitando per la prima volta dal 1984, artisti che fossero il riflesso e continuità di questo linguaggio e perciò strettamente legati al Writing. Dieci tra i migliori writer italiani: Airone, Ericsone, Flycat, Mr. Wany, Napal Naps, Ores, Rendo, Tawa, Zeus, il sottoscritto KayOne e Kool Koor, uno storico rappresentante della prima ondata newyorkese amico degli artisti già passati a Quattordio. Sono passati trent’anni da quando mi sono avvicinato al Graffiti Writing, meno rispetto a Quattordio, che rimarrà un caso unico nel suo genere e proprio per questo un luogo da preservare nel tempo. In questo senso abbiamo deciso, io e Alessandro di Stradedarts insieme all’amministrazione, durante le diverse attività di QUA - Quattordio Urban Art, di effettuare per la prima volta nella storia del Writing un restauro mantenitivo sull’opera eseguita da Phase 2, Delta 2 ed Ero, anche qui un primato, che sottolinea la lungimiranza del paese e che esprime la nostra visione rispetto alla conservazione di opere del genere. Dopo il libro che ho realizzato dedicato alla mia città, Milano - che in un certo senso rappresenta con la sua frenesia e velocità i binari di una metropolitana - sento con questo nuovo volume di aver proseguito sulla strada che amo, fermando un nuovo importante periodo storico italiano vicino al Graffiti Writing, dedicato a Quattordio, la stazione tranquilla e silenziosa tanto lontana dal rumore della città. Il paese che in un certo senso mi ha adottato, scoprendo, nuovamente, che il suo segreto non è mai stato la storia del graffitismo italiano, ma l’amore e la gentilezza dei suoi paesani, che ci hanno fatto apprezzare questo luogo come una casa, non solo dei Graffiti.
The event of Quattordio has always represented for me a fundamental aspect of Graffiti Writing, sharing and travel. This culture, born in a ghetto, has surpassed all borders and has arrived everywhere in our cities. No frontier, from New York to Quattordio, as if it were meant to be, the strength of art, the anticipation of what would take place in the years to come. Quattordio is a small town, which had nothing to share with this form of art, if it were not in the authenticity of people and in the desire to open up to the world. Arte di Frontiera, for those who wanted to study the history of Graffiti Writing is a fundamental step for our country, but also for Europe, which thanks to this exhibition and the arrival of the kids has received a fundamental push forward. An exhibition born from the intuition of the curator Francesca Alinovi, so similar to that of Renzo Gay, a citizen of Quattordio, traveler and administrator of a paint company in the country, who, in love with art and color, decided to bring these masters into the reality of a small Italian province. The exhibition of Arte di Frontiera, opened in 1984 at the Modern Art Gallery of Bologna (today MAMbo), and then continued in Milan and Rome, it was an opportunity to invite some of the artists present at the exhibition to paint in the village of Quattordio. Delta 2, Ero, Phase 2 and Rammellzee, some of the true legends of New York writing, who for the first time encountered the world, leaving their ghetto and getting what they deserved as their art had decreed. Hence the contemporary history of this country, from enlightened people, who have made this place a symbol of the opening of the world to this language, which has revolutionized the aesthetics of our streets and the concept of fruition of art. My journey starts here, as an irreducible lover of Writing, who had to see what was left of the historical event of 1984 American Graffiti in Quattordio. A real party, where the artists could deal with the genuine spontaneity of the people of Quattordio, sharing good wine and gifting the city with walls and paintings, but not only... break dance performances and rap improvisations accompanied by the town band. It was 1984, I think that the mutual feeling was of amazement, discovery and love for differences, which were a source of union and not of separation. That visit to Quattordio was an opportunity to rediscover a role lost over the years and give birth to the desire to give continuity to what had happened years before. On the occasion of the 1984 event, a very rare book was published, published by Nuove edizioni Gabriele Mazzotta, which I propose here in its contents, giving new life to those documents that would otherwise be the memory of a few. Enlarged with photographs and unpublished texts of 1984, this book does not stop here, it speaks of the story of Quattordio linked to Graffiti Writing, but also of its future, with the new event QUA - Quattordio Urban Art, which together with the municipal administration we thought and realized, thus to give continuity to the intuition that had made the town famous throughout Europe many years before. So a book that traces the past, present and future of Quattordio, becoming a new testimony of the idea matured together with the administration, to give continuity to American Graffiti with a biennial event, which leads the country to become an open-air museum, a continuation of the work begun many years before. My aim was to give new life to these important documents, but also to celebrate them by inviting for the first time since 1984, artists who represented the reflection and continuity of this language and therefore closely related to Writing. Ten of the best Italian writers: Airone, Ericsone, Flycat, Mr. Wany, Napal Naps, Ores, Rendo, Tawa, Zeus, the undersigned KayOne and Kool Koor, a historical representative of the first New York wave, friend of the artists who had already moved to Quattordio. Thirty years have passed since I got into Graffiti Writing, less than the event of Quattordio, which will remain a unique case of its kind and for this reason a place to preserve over time. In this sense we decided, I and Alessandro of Stradedarts together with the administration, during the different activities of QUA - Quattordio Urban Art, to perform for the first time in the history of Writing a restoration on the work performed by Phase 2, Delta 2 and Ero, also seen here as a record that underlines the vision of the country and expresses our vision regarding the conservation of such works. After my book dedicated to my city, Milan - which in a sense it represents, with its frenzy and speed the tracks of a subway - I feel that through this new volume I will have continued on the path I love, focusing on a new important period in Italian history of the Graffiti Writing, dedicated to Quattordio, the train station, quiet and silent, so far from the noise of the city. The town that in a sense has adopted me, discovering again that its secret has never been the history of Italian graffiti, but the love and kindness of its villagers, who have made us appreciate this place as a home, not just Graffiti.
